Now that you’ve mastered loading your dishwasher, (if you don’t know what we’re talking about, click here), we’ve got a different set of quick tips for you today to keep it running right and potentially save you time and money.
Make sure your dishwasher is clean
If your dishwasher is dirty, your dishes will stay dirty. Makes sense right? You should clean the spray arm and detergent dispenser in your dishwasher regularly to ensure proper water and detergent distribution. You should also clean out the filter that catches food debris occasionally to prevent blockages and buildup. Try using Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Tabs monthly to help remove odors.
Check that your water is hot enough
For a dishwasher to do its job, the entering water temperature needs to be at or above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. To save energy, you can run the hot water in your sink for a few minutes before starting a wash cycle to get it up to temperature faster. If it seems like your dishwasher isn’t staying hot during the cycle, it may be a problem with the heating element. You can check to see if it’s working properly with a multi-meter and find a replacement for you model here.
Find the right detergent for your washer
Avoid gel detergents if possible, they are prone to leaving suds and residue buildup in your dishwasher. Stick to powder, liquid, or pre-measured tablet detergents to get the best wash.
Run full loads, but not too full
Avoid unnecessary extra cycles by running fewer, fuller loads. However, be sure to avoid overloading your washer to ensure your dishes get clean and you don’t cause future problems for your dishwasher.
Find the shortest effective cycle and air dry
On most washers, you’ll have a few different options for wash cycles to choose from on the control panel or touch pad. Test out the shorter cycles and find the shortest cycle that gets your dishes clean. If you have time, you can also select the air dry option. The dry cycle is where most of your dishwasher energy costs stem from, so in the long run this can be a real money saver.
Use your dishwasher
Take advantage of your dishwasher, it’s meant to make things easier! Not only that, but it’s been proven that newer dishwashers use less water than you would washing your dishes by hand. Save that time and money for something more exciting than doing the dishes.
