On all dryers, the door switch activates when the dryer door is closed. It generally makes a clicking sound once activated. If the dryer does not start when the door is closed, then the door switch may be defective. In most brands, the switch is located behind the front panel with the switch button protruding into the door opening.
The switch can be tested with a multi-tester for continuity, may have more than one terminal. The test should be made between terminals marked “C” and “NO” and should read “0” ohms when the door is closed or button is depressed.
The thermal fuse is a safety devise designed to protect the dryer from overheating. When the fuse blows it interrupts the main power supply. The fuse is located on the blower housing or the dyers heat source. If overheated the fuse will have no continuity, meaning the electrical path may be broken and the fuse is blown.
Before testing the fuse with a multi-tester, make sure to unplug the drying machine. Your dryer could also be overheating because vents are blocked and the circulation fan isn’t working. Check this upon testing the fuse.
Rotary/Push Start Switch
Located in the dryer’s main console is the start switch. To determine if it is defective, attempt to start the dryer. If the dryer hums but does not start, the problem is not the start switch. If the dryer does not respond upon starting the machine, then it is the start switch.
In this case, test the start switch for continuity – if it has non, your drying machine needs to be replaced. Make sure to unplug your dryer before testing the continuity.
Both gas and electric dryers have a motor that turns the blower and the dryer drum. A defective motor can cause your drying to to start but makes a humming noise once the “On” switch is activated.
If you want to know if your motor is defective, you must call a specialist – for your safety.
Main Control Board
Electronic drying machines use a circuit board to operate the electrical components of your dryer. It is located in the dryers main panel. Symptoms that the control board is damaged include burn marks on the board or parts appear to be shorted.
This usually cannot be repaired, it must be replaced. Call a specialist.
Located on the control console of your dryer is a small motor connected to a series of gears that turn electric contacts off and on inside the timer. The timer contacts control to the dryer motor, as well as the heat circuit and the timer motor.
A defective timer contact can prevent power from transferring to the motor. The continuity can be tested with a multi-meter after the drying machine is unplugged.
If the dryer blows fuses or trips circuit breakers in the main control panel could be the result of a faulty terminal block. The terminal block connects the dryer’s internal wires to the power cord. Loose connections will eventually overheat and result in a fire hazard.
You must disconnect the power before accessing the terminal block and visually check for signs of overheating. Overheated terminals means that the terminal block or damaged wires need to be replaced. Call a specialist.
