20 Things You Didn’t Know You Can Wash in Your Dishwasher


A dishwasher is one of the greatest gifts your kitchen can give you. No more scrubbing those heavy pots and pans. Dishwashers cut your clean-up time in half, making chores effortless! However, if your dishwasher is just cleaning your dishes it is not living up to its full potential. Along with dishes there are many other super dirty things that your dishwasher will clean and shine for you.  Learn about all of the items in your home that your dishwasher can sanitize and deodorize!

  1. Shoes: Rubber rain boots, flip flops, and pool shoes. Throw them in your dishwasher to get a good cleaning. Make sure to remove liners and orthopedic inserts. Skip the drying cycle to make sure heat won’t damage your shoes.
  2. Baseball Hats: Hats are able to keep their shape if placed on the top rack of your dishwasher for cleaning and deodorizing. Skip the drying cycle and place hat somewhere dry.
  3. Sporting Equipment: Place plastic shin guards, balls, and helmets on the top rack for cleaning, sanitizing, and deodorizing. Add a cup of white vinegar on the bottom rack for extra deodorizing.
  4. Kid and Pet Toys: As long as they’re not battery operated, plastic kid and pet toys are perfect items to fit into the top compartment of your dishwasher. Skip the drying cycle so heat does not distort the toys.
  5. Hairbrushes and Combs: Remove hair and place plastic combs and brushes in the cutlery tray for the wash cycle. Do not put any products with wooden handles in the dishwasher as wood does not do well in hot water.
  6. Makeup Brushes: You can regularly sanitize these brushes that touch your eyes and face. Clean on a low setting and skip the heating cycle to ensure brushes will not melt together!
  7. Kitchen Brushes & Sponges: Get rid of that funky smell of your sponge and simply throw it in the dishwasher! Stand them up between pegs on the top rack.
  8. Gardening Tools: Any kind of tools you have can be washed in your dishwasher to get that dirt and gunk off. Do not include any tools with wooden handles because hot water can cause the wood to crack or split.
  9. Vent Covers & Grilles: After accumulating all that dust and grime, they are a hassle to clean by hand. No need – just put them right in your dish washer to give them back their shine!
  10. Cup Holders: These can become encrusted with spilled coffee, soda, or whatever mystery juice you kids chose that day! Throw them on the top rack of your dishwasher to ensure they will not melt.
  11. Toothbrush Holder: These can develop a mildew smell as water builds up at the bottom of the holder. Give them a nice rinse and deodorize them in your dishwasher! Place upside down on to a peg to ensure a thorough cleaning.
  12. Fake Flowers: These tend to look especially fake accumulated with dust. Instead of throwing them away, give them a short wash in your dishwasher to look like new again!
  13. Window Screens: A dirty screen means dirty flow of air into your bedroom. If you can manage to fit them in your dishwasher, the clean screen will allow more sun shine into your home!
  14. Knobs: Any kind of knob that is easily removable can be sanitized in your dishwasher.
  15. Small Trash Cans & Lids: Bath & Bed size trash cans generate a buildup of gunk & grime at the bottom if there is leakage through the trash bag. Clean, sanitize, and deodorize those bad boys!
  16. Refrigerator Shelves and Drawers: Save yourself the extensive scrubbing of your sticky refrigerator drawers Throw all removable compartments into your dishwasher for a thorough cleaning.
  17. Hub Caps: To make them really shine, place your hub caps with a cup of white vinegar into your dishwasher. Want clean lug nuts? No problem. Just place them in a mesh bag first so they don’t damaged the inside if your dishwasher.
  18. Potatoes & Root Vegetables: When you harvest your own potatoes, beets, and turnips in your garden, cleaning the dirt off can be a daunting task. Make your life a little easier and place them on the top rack of your dishwasher WITHOUT soap.
  19. Figurines: Make your grandmother’s day and put her figurines in your dishwasher and give them back their polished look!
  20. Your Keys: This may seem unnecessary, but for clean freaks sanitizing your keys has never sounded better! Put them in your dishwasher as often as you’d like.
