Why is my Refrigerator Warm and Freezer Cold?


We all know that moment. The moment that you open your refrigerator not to the refreshing cool blast of air on your face, but a strangely warm and slightly smelly blast of air on your face. There is nothing worse than a dysfunctional refrigerator. The most visited appliance is the appliance you should keep an eye on when it comes to maintenance. The Evaporator Coils Are Frosted Over

Typically the defrost heater will turn on a few times during the day to melt off any ice or frost that out build on these coils. But, if this heater is not working correctly, you will find the coils to be frosted over. When this happens, your freezer will stay cold but the refrigerator will get warm as there is a lack of cold air flow. Some people completely defrost the full unit by unplugging it and letting it sit. Others have found success quickly by both unplugging the unit and using a hair dryer to more quickly melt the frost away.  Be sure to test each part of the defrosting system.

Tips To Avoid Frost:

Do not block the air flow or fan inside of the freezer. If you stuff your freezer, it can likely block the air flow, causing the freezer to frost up and the refrigerator to get warm. Try to fill your freezer about 2/3rds of the way to maintain a cold temperature without blocking off essential air flow.

The Evaporator Fan Motor Is Defective

The evaporator fan motor is what pushes cold air from the coils to the next part of the unit, such as the refrigerator. You can check to see if this is working simply by rotating the fan by hand. If it is stuck, you need to replace the fan motor. Also, if you find that the motor is unusually loud or does not run at all, you should replace it. Damper Control Assembly

The damper control is what opens and closes to allow the correct amount of cold air into the refrigerator part of the unit. Tips To Avoid Frequent Refrigerator Repair

Clean The Condenser Coils Often! This part of the unit is typically under or behind the appliance and can easily collect dust, dirt, and hair. You can access most coils (depending on the exact model) by removing the kick plate from the bottom of the unit.

Keep The Refrigerator Door Closed! If the door is open for too long, the unit works harder to keep the inside cold. If the compressor overheats and shuts off, it will stop cooling the refrigerator until it cools down. Try to clean the door seals often to make sure the door is completely closed.

Allow The Correct Air Flow Around The Unit! If you build a snug-fit cabinet around a refrigerator you are restricting air flow to the unit. This can shorten the lifespan of the unit because the refrigerator cannot remove the heat it is expelling.change-purse-1240012-639x852.jpg

Do Not Overload Your Refrigerator! Do not put excessive products in the doors, bins or shelves. Putting excess weight on these parts can damage both the hinges and the seal.
