November 4, 2016 – Samsung has officially recalled 34 top-loading washing machine models due to risk of damage and potential injury from impact after receiving 733 reports of excessive vibration or the top detaching from the chassis.

This is said to be caused by a problem with the drum potentially losing balance, triggering these excessive vibrations during the high-speed spin cycle when washing large or bulky items such as bedding.

The affected models are as follows:

These models were sold nationwide at a variety of home appliance stores including Best Buy, Lowes, Sears, and the Home Depot between March of 2011 and current production dates.  Approximately 2.8 Million washers have been included in this recall.

To verify if your washer has been included in the recall, you can visit the Samsung website https://pages.samsung.com/us/tlw/index.html and enter your model & serial number, or contact them directly at their toll-free number 866-264-5636 from 8am to 10pm ET.

The model and serial number, as well as the manufacturing date should be located on a tag either behind the control panel or on the back of the washer. If you do have an affected model, contact Samsung immediately.

Samsung is currently offering a few solutions.  The first option is a free in-home repair with warranty extension for non mid-control washer models. This repair includes the installation of additional structural reinforcements.

The second option is a rebate towards a new washer, as well as free removal of the old unit and installation of the new one. The value of the rebate will depend on the age and model of the washer.  If you choose to purchase a new Samsung washer, this rebate could include up to an additional $150 as a loyalty incentive.

If you purchased a recalled washer in the 30 days prior to this recall, you are eligible for a full refund from the retailer.

All known owners should also receive a home label kit in the mail, which includes a new control panel guide, warning labels, and additional user support materials.

At this time, there have unfortunately been 9 reports of injuries from impact or falls.  Until your washer has been repaired or exchanged, Samsung strongly recommends using only the low speed or delicate cycles for bulkier items to help avoid injury.
