Diagnosing Common Problems In Your Range

Throughout a ranges life there is a good chance that it will run into some sort of problem. Being able to diagnose what is wrong with your range can help you decide whether or not you need to hire a repairman. Having knowledge of what may be wrong with your range can also help you and the repairman save time because you won’t have to spend time trying to diagnose the issue. So take a minute to lean how to diagnose some of the common problems ranges have.

  • Your Display Is Flashing But Has Power
    • A common reason why your ranges display may be flashing is that the clock may need to be reset. Many times a ranges display will start flashing after a power outage. Resetting the clock on a range differs between every range, so to reset your ranges clock refer to your ranges manual.
  • Your Range Has No Power 
    • The first thing you will want to check if your oven is not receiving any power is the outlet. To do so unplug the range from its power source and plug a different appliance into the same outlet to see if it receives power.
      • If the other appliance also did not receive power you will want to go check your fuse box to reset that area.
      • If when you plugged the other appliance into the outlet it received power then there is most likely a problem with your ranges terminal block. The terminal block is the part of the range that connects the main power of the house to the range.
  • Your Range Is Not heating 
    • There are a couple common reasons why a range may not be heating. The range could have a faulty heating element, the ranges terminal block may be damaged, or there could be problems with the ranges thermostats.
      • Heating Elements
        • Having a faulty heating element is probably the most common reason why a range would not heat. To check to see if you have faulty heating elements you can use a multimeter. To do so, switch the meter to low-resistance mode then put the probes of the meter to the terminal of the heating element. A functioning heating element should have a reading of less than 100.
      • Terminal Block
        • Since the terminal block is the main power source to the range having a faulty terminal block can cause almost all functions of the range to not work.
      • Thermostats
        • The job of the range thermostat is to adjust and control the temperature inside of the range. If you have a faulty thermostat is can cause your range to not heat, overheat, or bake food unevenly.
  • Your Ranges Fans Are Really Loud
    • There are typically two different fans inside of a range, a cooling fan, and a circulation fan. If your ranges fans are abnormally loud this is usually caused by a faulty fan motor, you can fix this by replacing your fans motor.
  • Your Ranges Door Won’t Stay Closed During The Cleaning Cycle
    • The primary reason a ranges door will not shut or stay closed is a worn, broken or damaged door latch. The door latch locks the range closed during the cleaning cycle. To fix a range door that will not remain closed during the cleaning cycle you may need to replace your ranges door latch.
  • Your Ranges Surface Element Is Not Working 
    • There are a couple common reasons why ranges surface elements could not be working, a burned out surface element or a damaged surface unit receptacle.
      • Burned Out Surface Element
        • There are two types of surface burner elements, coil surface elements and smooth-top radiant surface elements. For coil surface elements check for breaks or blistering in the coils to determine if the element is faulty. For smooth-top surface radiant elements you can check for burned spots or breaks to determine if the element is faulty.
      • Damaged Surface Unit Receptacle
        • The surface unit receptacle is the part of the range that the surface elements plug into so that heat is provided to the surface element. Over time the surface unit receptacle can become worn out, leading to no heat being provided to the surface element.
