How To Clean A Humidifier

Humidifiers provide many benefits and are great to have in your home, but they come at an expensive price. Humidifiers are ideal for individuals with allergies because they help fight indoor dry air. Humidifiers produce water vapor, which increases the overall humidity levels in the air. If you do not take proper care of your humidifier it can harm your health. So, if you own a humidifier please make sure you are cleaning it regularly. Follow these steps below on how to clean your humidifier.

Things to keep in mind:

If you are using your humidifier regularly, you should be cleaning it once a week in order to keep mineral deposits from forming in the water.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Bleach/ Hydrogen Peroxide
  • White Vinegar
  • Gloves
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Water
  • Clean towels
  • Gloves and goggles

Step-by-step instructions for cleaning your humidifier:

  1. Unplug your humidifier from its power source
  2. Disassemble your humidifier
  3. Remove and empty out the water tank
  4. Depending the make and model of your humidifier, unlock any removable parts from the base and set it to the side. If your unit contains an air filter remove that as well
  5. Pour White Vinegar into the base that fills all of the areas which water comes in contact with and any washable parts place them in a tub of white vinegar to soak for a half hour then use a small brush to clean the parts
  6. Using 1 teaspoon of bleach/hydrogen peroxide per every gallon of water till the tank at least half way and swish this around. Let this soak for a half hour
  7. Use water to rinse out the water tank and all the other parts that were placed to the side. Lay everything out to air dry
  8. Once all the parts have dried completely, fill your tank up with clean water, replace back your air filter, replace back any parts, and plug in your humidifier.
