Why is my Dishwasher Clogged?


Have you ever been faced with this particular problem? Your poor dishwasher has failed you and you aren’t quite sure what to do. It shouldn’t surprise you that your food and scrapes can clog the drain. Luckily there is a way to fix this problem.

Here’s what you can do if your dishwasher is not draining properly.

  1. Clear the garbage disposal

The water from your dishwasher will drain through your garbage disposal. Sometimes your garbage disposal gets backed up with food and scrapes. If this is the case, you will want to keep your garbage disposal all clear as possible so water can easily pass through it. If you garbage disposal is backed up then it can leave standing water inside your dishwasher. Make sure to run your garbage disposal in order to loosen any clogs.

  1. Clean the air gap

Many homes will contain an air gap that is installed onto their counter next to the faucet. The air gap prevents water from the sink backing up into the dishwasher. If the air gap is clogged it could be the reason why your dishwasher isn’t draining properly. If there is water flooding on your counter, then you will need to unclog your air gap. To clear the air gap simply take off the cap and get rid of any debris that are visible.

  1. Clear up the drain clog with a diy solution

Sometimes our garbage disposal fails us and you can’t unclog it. Try this simple diy solution in order to break up the drain.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Hot Water

Step-by-step how-to instructions to clear up the drain:

  1. Pour the solution of baking soda and vinegar down the basket, located at the bottom of your dishwasher.
  2. Let the solution to sit for 10-15 minutes
  3. Pour a pot of hot boiling water down the basket and see if this unclogs the drain.
