How to Clean a Range Hood Grease Filter


When was the last time you cleaned the under the hood grease filter? Have you ever cleaned it before? If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your grease filter then it’s not too late to clean it now! This range hood grease filter traps grease from the exhaust air. Cleaning this filter could get a little messy. Follow these steps to clean your grease filter.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Baking soda
  • De-greasing dish soap
  • Non-abrasive scrub brush
  • Dish cloth or paper towels


  1. Remove the grease filter: Most filters you can just slide or pop them out. If you are unsure how to remove your grease filter, look it up in your owner’s manual.
  2. Fill a sink or bucket with boiling water: The higher the temperature of the water the better it is for cleaning. Consider boiling a pot of water and pour it into the sink.
  3. Pour in baking soda and dish soap: Pour in a generous amount of de-greasing dish soup and roughly a ¼ cup of baking soda into the hot water and mix this around.
  4. Put your greasy filter(s) in water: Next, place your filter in the water. Make sure that your filter is completely submerged under the cleaning solution in the sink.
  5. Let the grease filter soak: Let your filter soak in the sink for approximately 10 minutes. If it is really dirty, let it sit for a longer period of time.
  6. Scrub the filter: After letting the filter soak, use a non-abrasive scrub brush to scrub it: You may add more de-greasing dish soap to your scrub brush if needed.
  7. Rinse and dry: Finally, rinse the filter(s) thoroughly with clean hot water and dry with a paper towel or dishcloth.

*For best results, repeat the cleaning process until it is clean!*

Be sure to clean your filter once a month so your grease filter operates efficiently.
