Items You Should Never Put in the Dishwasher


Unfortunately you can’t wash everything in the dishwasher. Some items you will actually have to hand-wash in order to get them clean. Here are some items that you should never put in your dishwasher.

  1. Anything Wood

Anything that is made out of wood should stay out of the dishwasher. For example, wood cutting board, utensils, and even utensils with a wood handle on it. The dishwasher detergent can harm the wood grain and can scratch the wood over time. The heat from the dishwasher can even cause the wood to crack. Simply hand-wash any item made out of wood and don’t submerge it in water.

  1. Cast Iron

Cast iron’s should never be put in the dishwasher because the dishwasher detergent can break down the surface on it. Simply just hand-wash your cast iron with hot water and a scrub and like magic it is clean!

  1. Aluminum Cookware

You technically shouldn’t put your pots and pans in the dishwasher because they will lose their shine and eventually fade away just after a cleaning cycle, but it’s okay if you do. Different types of cookware such as stainless steel and even doppelganger can normally be cleaned in the dishwasher, but to be safe make sure you follow the instructions from the manufacturer.

  1. Anything Copper or Metal

Putting anything copper or metal in your dishwasher can cause the item to become dull or cause discoloration. Silver, gold, and bronze as well although are beautiful should be hand-washed if you want to keep them shiny and lasting a long time.

  1. Plastic Items

Read the manufacturer label on your plastic items before just throwing it in the dishwasher. Some plastic items are dishwasher safe and some are not. These plastic items can get scratched, become dull, and potentially melt as well. If you do plan on cleaning your plastic items in the dishwasher place them on the top dishrack.

  1. Kitchen Knives

If you own really nice knives you should not put in them in the dishwasher to be cleaned. The detergent can dull the blade. Simply hand-wash your knives with some hot soapy water in the sink so you don’t damage the blade or handle.

  1. Fine China, Crystal or Painted Plates

These items are very delicate and should be taken care of with the utmost care. Placing these types of items in the dishwasher can cause them to chip, lose their finish, or even fade. Simply just hand-wash your fine china, crystal or painted plates.
