Garbage Disposal Pros and Cons

Standard

Are you thinking about getting a garbage disposal but not sure? A garbage disposal is a nifty machine that breaks down biodegradable food waste into tiny particles.  Having a garbage disposal is convenient but it might not be for you. Here we have listed the pros and cons of a garbage disposal

Pros:

Convenience

Having a garbage disposal makes it easy when doing the dishes and saves you a lot of time.

Sanitary

Garbage disposals save times for those cooks who just don’t have time to get rid of scraps or find a way to dispose of the trash. This is great if you have no space to dispose of any scraps and allows you to cook without any worries.

Odor

Whether we realize it or not, once we throw our food scraps in the trash it just sits there to rot in our trash. The good part of having a in-sink garage disposal decreases the odor that comes from food waste.

Cons:

Potential clogging

Without proper usage, many homeowners will come across clogging in their garbage disposal. This is because certain foods should not be put down the garbage disposal such as oil, vegetables, and hard foods.

Items that should not be put down your disposal:

  • Bones
  • Fruit pits
  • Small pebbles
  • Grease, oil
  • Pasta or rice
  • Stringy vegetables
  • Fruit and vegetable peels
  • Glass
  • Cigarette butts
  • Shells

Risks of injury

If you are careless, you can potentially injure yourself using a garbage disposal. Learning the proper care of a garbage disposal can decrease the chances of you and your family getting injured.

Odor

This contradicts what we have stated above. This is because although a garbage disposal decreases the smell that comes from the trash sitting in your home, food particles can build up in your disposal.  If you smell any odor, run the garbage disposal with cool water and grind citruses such as fresh orange, lemon, or limes.
