How to Clean Your Refrigerator Gasket

The gasket or seal on your refrigerator and freezer door are responsible for creating an air tight seal to keep the inside cool. It is important to clean along the edges of the refrigerator and freezer doors. Follow these steps so you can clean the door gasket easily.

  1. Make a cleaning solution

Mix 1 quart of water with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. You can even mix a cleaning solution of mild soap and water.

  1. Wipe down the gasket

Use a cloth and toothbrush to clean the gasket. Wrap a cloth over a toothbrush and wipe down the gasket.  Or you can use just the cloth to wipe down the gasket. Cleaning the gasket will prevent mold, mildew, and get rid of any odors. This will keep everything in your refrigerator cool.

  1. Analyze the gasket

Check the gasket for any tears or holes. To check if you need to replace the gasket on your refrigerator use the dollar bill trick. Simply place a dollar bill in the refrigerator door. If the door pulls out easily you need a new gasket if it doesn’t then your gasket is in proper working condition.

An air-tight seal on your refrigerator door will help your food inside stay fresh longer.
