The dishwasher is basically your best friend when it comes to kitchen cleaning. It saves you countless hours washing the dishes, but did you know that it can be used to clean so much more than just your dirty dishes? Many common household items can also be popped in the dishwasher for hassle-free cleaning. Continue reading to see an assortment of them and save yourself some cleaning time!
Kitchen sponges/Brushes – These can be washed in loads with other dishes. Put the sponges on the top rack and brushes in the utensil holder. This also works for shower sponges and poofs.
Cabinet Hardware – If the handles in your kitchen are sticky or dirty, you can remove them and put them in a mesh bag on the top rack.
Bathroom Accessories – Things like toothbrush cups, soap dishes, and cosmetic organizers should be cleaned weekly, and the dishwasher is an easy way to kill those bathroom germs.
Hairbrushes – Brushes and combs can simply be put in the utensil holder and run through a regular cycle.
Toys – If you have kids, you know their toys need to be sanitized quite often. You can put bath toys, small figures, and building blocks (plastic ones) in a mesh bag on the top rack of the dishwasher.
Pet Accessories – Anything your pet uses daily can get gross in a very short time. Their toys, food/water dishes, and even non-leather collars and leashes can be sanitized by running them through a cycle on the top rack.
Rubber Shoes – Things such as flip flops and rubber boots can be run through a quick cycle to get them shining like new. Just brush off any chunks of dirt beforehand, and put boots upside down on the bottom rack.
Grill Grates – Don’t want to spend hours scraping the grill grates? Take them out and run them through the hottest cycle. The grime should mostly come off, and any left should be loose enough to easily brush off.
Sporting Equipment – Small, hard, and plastic sporting stuff can be run in a regular cycle on the top rack. This includes things like mouth guards, golf balls, and most lawn game equipment.
Car Accessories – The rubber floor mats, cup holders, and even your keys can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Make sure keys are in some kind of mesh bag to prevent them from falling into the wash mechanism or getting lost. Mats and cup holders should be cleaned on the top rack.
Remember to always follow the care instructions on the specific items you wish to wash to make sure they are dishwasher-safe. Things such as wood pieces, cast iron, copper, and thin plastics should never go in the machine. And of course, if you use the dishwasher to clean something not-so-appealing, be sure to clean it well before running another load of dishes.
